While I guess it's not as set in stone since it's game lingo, P2W has always (as far as I'm aware anyway) been used to describe game mechanics that simply aren't available to players who don't pay extra for them (classes, flying, ect), give their character mechanics/rewards that override skillful play (BIS loot), or replace systems that are such a horrible grind that it would take months and months. I think what you do with your retainers is something most people don't mind/don't care about, as those extra retainers are simply replacing menial labor that is readily accessible to anyone who wants to do it themselves. That is not always the case (ACO certainly wasn't), and lazily making that argument devalues the cases where the game is actually designed around microtransactions (Battlefront II and Shadow of War) What made me stop watching Jim Sterling's videos was the assertion that if player power is offered in an in-game store (in that case, Assassin's Creed Odyssey), the game must be designed around it.

That's not to say that Blizzard has been giving a free character boost with each $40 WoW expansion (with Shadowlands deviating from that slightly, you need to pay an extra $20 for it). And then in the upcoming expansion, the leveling experience was revamped entirely, allowing you to hit the former max level in less than 24 hours played. The latest expansion cut down the pain points of leveling, and then doubled all experience gain due to COVID. Please don't make it out to be a bigger deal than it is.Ĭlick to shrink. In World of Warcraft, players often speculated that the reason that the leveling was extremely bad was because of the $60 max-level character boosts. Though I guess it's a fair trade if you really don't want to go gather them yourself (cause it literally takes them upwards of two? rl hours to gather something you can gather yourself in 5 min). Plus, you still have to pay the retainers with ventures that you are only going to get by.you guessed it!.playing the game and earning them! Double the retainers means double the ventures you gotta pay too.

Pay to win what? Not only can they only hunt and gather specific materials *after* you gain the ability to gather them yourself (they can't be a class higher level that your own), but you get two for free and they do the exact same thing as the paid ones. And it's still the most friendly major MMO I have ever played regarding player characters since everyone can play any and every class on the same character without having to worry about extra character slots or whatever. Flying enabled in ARR areas, removing several filler quests, increasing the EXP earned by leveling and making better gear more easily available are just a few of the things they have done over time. This is literally the worst time in the game's history to bring this up since they just massively improved the leveling experience lol. Literally nothing that matters unless your subjectitive opinion is that you have to have those specifically over the literal dozens of other emotes, hundreds of other mounts/pets and thousands of clothing glamours available in-game for you to earn or buy off the AH with no real money involved beyond that sub fee! Please don't pretend it's anything more than that and we can go from there. There are a collection of a few exclusive emotes/clothes/pets (that of course are nothing but cosmetic) and old event items from previous years, but that's it. The cash shop is expensive, but also incredibly non-intrusive, completely optional and lacking any p2w options of any kind, and functionally has nothing that you can't earn in game, including a 4 seater mount which is available to earn in game right now, as well as the old unobtainable one that a lot of us veterans have (that event could come around again someday too, who knows). Makes meaningful discussion hard unfortunately. It's funny because as much as I love FFXIV I have genuine complaints about it, but I also have played it long enough so that I (and I guess a lot of others here) can really, really tell when someone is just complaining about the game to complain and don't actually seem to know much of what they are complaining about.
